Hyperloop (Maglev version) implementation details
Hyperloop is best compared to rail transport. It is basically a lightweight train in a tube. Following list of propositions shows most important Hyperloop implementation details.
Estimated Hyperloop tube width is around 3.3 meters. Two tubes in parallel are needed. Assuming that the tubes are close to one another then overall width of the line could be around 6.6 meters. This value can be rounded up to 7 meters.
HSR line width is measured differently than Hyperloop. Track gauge and the width of the train car is not that relevant, more important value is Track spacing1. Track spacing includes one size of the rail track and a space between tracks. If another track width and outside spacing is added then we can estimate the width of two tracks to be equal double the value of the track spacing. Generous value for track spacing is 4.5 meters. So the width of two-track line is around 9 meters. This is minimal width for the line.
In reality HSR lines and supporting structures are wider. For example San Joaquin River Viaduct is 13.3 meters wide.2 So generous HSR line width can be estimated to be 14 meters.
So, it can be estimated that Hyperloop line is 50% narrower than HSR line.
